Teaching Practice Reflection Week 5 (August 26-30, 2024)

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

— Benjamin Franklin

Subject: Social Science

Unit: Distribution of Power in Indian Constitution

Classes: 9th D and E

Introduction

The final week of the first phase of my teaching practice at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Nedumangad, was a culmination of the efforts made over the previous weeks. My primary focus was on wrapping up the unit on ‘Distribution of Power in Indian Constitution’ and conducting revision sessions to consolidate the students’ learning. In addition to teaching, I handled various responsibilities, including substitution periods and end-of-phase feedback sessions with students.

Classroom Teaching

This week, I focused on concluding the unit with the following activities:

1.Revision Sessions – I conducted comprehensive revision classes covering all the topics from the unit. Students were encouraged to ask questions and clarify doubts on constitutional provisions, amendments, executive functions, judiciary, and local self-governance.

2.Quiz and Discussions – To reinforce learning, I conducted a class quiz on the Indian Constitution. Group discussions were held to encourage students to reflect on their knowledge and collaborate in solving questions.

3.Self-Assessment – Students were given self-assessment tasks to evaluate their understanding of the unit. This encouraged self-reflection and helped identify areas for improvement.

My teaching approach remained student-centered, with activities that fostered collaboration and critical thinking.

Substitution Periods

During substitution periods, I organized reflective activities and light discussions on democratic values and real-life governance examples. Students enjoyed interactive tasks such as debate sessions and creative posters, which helped them apply classroom concepts in an enjoyable manner.

Additional Responsibilities

1.Mid-Day Meals: I continued my role in distributing mid-day meals, ensuring the smooth and efficient completion of this responsibility.

2.Student Feedback: I gathered feedback from students on my teaching methods and activities, helping me reflect on and improve my instructional strategies.

3.Evening Duties: I managed line duty, ensuring discipline and safety during the dispersal of students.

Reflections and Observations

This final week allowed me to reflect on the progress made over the entire phase. The students’ improvement in participation and critical thinking was evident, and their curiosity and engagement with the subject were particularly gratifying. The positive feedback I received from students and teachers further strengthened my confidence in my teaching abilities.

Summary

Week 5 marked the successful conclusion of the first phase of my teaching practice. By focusing on revision and self-reflection, I helped students consolidate their understanding of the unit. The experience of balancing teaching with various responsibilities has been invaluable, helping me grow both as an educator and a lifelong learner.
