                                  Teaching Practice Reflection Week 3 (August 12-16, 2024)

Unit: Distribution of Power in Indian Constitution

Classes: 9th D and E


Introduction


During the week of August 12 to 16, 2024, my teaching practice at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Nedumangad, was filled with dynamic classroom experiences and valuable learning moments. Continuing to teach the unit ‘Distribution of Power in Indian Constitution,’ I explored topics such as Constitutional Amendments, Executives, Judiciary, and the Powers of the Supreme Court. In addition, I fulfilled various non-teaching responsibilities and played an active role in ensuring the holistic development of the students.


Classroom Teaching


Throughout the week, I maintained my focus on ensuring student engagement and participation in Social Science classes. I introduced the following topics to 9th D and E students:

1.Constitutional Amendments (12/08/2024) – I explained the process and significance of amending the Indian Constitution, emphasizing its role in adapting to societal changes.2.Executives (13/08/2024) – I adopted an advance organizer lesson plan to introduce the structure and powers of the executive branch in India.

3.Judiciary and Supreme Court (14/08/2024) – I elaborated on the Indian judicial system and the powers of the Supreme Court, highlighting landmark cases to make the topic relatable.


Using a constructivist approach, I incorporated group discussions and collaborative activities to ensure active student participation. The students worked on case studies, role-plays, and group presentations, which promoted critical thinking and enhanced their understanding of constitutional principles.

Substitution Periods

I continued to handle multiple substitution periods, ensuring that students remained engaged and disciplined. Activities included discussions on current events, creative drawing tasks, and simple brain games to promote teamwork. These sessions helped create a relaxed and positive classroom environment.

Additional Responsibilities

1.Mid-Day Meals: I continued assisting with the distribution of mid-day meals, ensuring timely service and monitoring student well-being.

2.Student Activities: I assigned follow-up activities for Social Science topics, encouraging students to reflect on their learning and connect it to real-life scenarios.

3.Evening Duties: I managed line duty during student dispersal, ensuring discipline and safety at the end of the school day.

Observations and Reflections

The highlight of this week was observing how students began making connections between constitutional principles and real-life examples. Their growing curiosity and willingness to ask questions about the Indian government structure indicated a deeper level of engagement with the subject. I also observed that collaborative activities fostered a sense of teamwork and improved the overall classroom atmosphere.

Summary

Week 3 was marked by comprehensive teaching and active participation in school life. My focus on fostering a constructivist learning environment helped the students grasp challenging concepts with ease. Balancing academic instruction with co-curricular responsibilities ensured a holistic approach to teaching practice, reinforcing my belief in the multifaceted role of a teacher.
